I just found this forum and have been reading the posts about how dead this place is and how to promote the forum. I have a few suggestions............
Get rid of this board, I've been searching for knife forums for the last 2 years and only stumbled upon this one now. The name p078.ezboard.com/bcanadia...nthusiasts
doesn't exactly roll off the tongue and google has never turned this board up in numerous searches over the last 2 years.
A free website is great, but if no one can find it, its pretty useless. You need to pay for a web address like www.cke.com or www.cke.ca to make it simple to remember and will show up in a search engine. I just checked and canadianknives.ca is available... if you shop around you can buy this domain for less then 100.00 for 10 years. You then need to do some webhosting research and find a cheap but reliable webhosting service. These can be found for less than 100.00 a year if you look around.
I realize this is a cash outlay out of your pocket, but I think a canadian based knife forum is a great idea and I also think once you got it going that we fellow canucks would be willing to donate a few bucks to keep it going. There are lots of ways to raise funds for the webhosting etc. Once the forum is in place, knife auctions, donations, sponsors, etc. will help foot the bills. Once the site is up and running well, im sure there are a few Canadian sponsors we could hit up for hosting expenses etc. in exchange for some advertising. I hate advertising but I'd much rather see knife related advertising than "how to become a certified accountant"
Once the new site is up and running add a knifemakers chat to it. Are all the makers in Canada are living in a shell? It seems like there are 2 knife makers on every block in the U.S. but in Canada they are few and far between. Get them on the board and talking, live chat with other makers is a great way to learn even for the masters.
Once you have that set up contact people like George Tichbourne (who holds a "coffee time" session in his shop where fellow knife makers can gather occasionally to talk knives and shoot the breeze). See if he would be willing to spread the word. Once them 10-20 people know the board is here ... they will tell others and so on and so on. Another way to promote the new site is to ask suppliers that we all get knifemaking supplies from or buy knives from to pass the word around, maybe put a small blurb on their invoices about "The new Canadian Knife Forum".
I'm willing to pitch in and help get this up and running, lets hear some feed back from admin and other members here as to where we all want this to go.
